Types of Horse Saddles

Posted on 2008-11-25

There are different saddles styles available for dressage, even ting, pleasure riding or jumping. For instance a rider indulged in jumping will require a different saddle than one in dressage. There is a strong shift in physical balance when rider jumps. In this case, it requires a saddle which can support its knees and feet also protect him for injury. A horse saddle used in dressage must maintain upright posture of the rider while riding.

There are two types of horse saddles English or western. English saddles are lightweight, fitting close to the horse. It gives rider enough control while riding. These saddles are mainly used for jumping, racing or dressage.

Western Saddle is heavier than English. It is made of strong leather which helps rider to attain proper position and comfort during long rides. Western Saddles are used for endurance or trail riding.

Horse racing an exciting sport

Posted on 2008-11-19

People are really fond of watching football, cricket rugby and are really passionate about it; these games are popular   since they provide thrill and excitement to the common person.

Horse Racing also provide same kind of excitement and thrill to the people, but unfortunately it is not as much popular in masses as football and cricket are, it is limited to horse lovers , people dealing in equestrian products such as saddle pads , horse rugs are really passionate about it.

Problem with horse racing is that many people consider it as gambling. Earlier people used to run horses for pride, in England people running horses were considered high class not gamblers. If you want to learn about horse racing and want to see the horse racing action without gambling, then you should tune in to ESPN to watch it.

Horse racing also provides jobs to lot of people radio jockeys, cleaners, horse tack suppliers, horse sellers / breeders all are associated with it.

Looking at this we find that it is a source of income for many people. In this scenario, it is doing an excellent job.

Things to consider before buying a saddle

Posted on 2008-11-11

People do not realize the amount of extra money they have to spend while buying a saddle. Horse Saddlery Equipment are so expensive that it is better to make a plan what to buy, what not to buy before going to market.

Check out the prices of saddles from various saddle shops, it helps you in making a decision which saddle is suitable for your horses, and what kind of riding you want.

If you are really tight on budget, don’t worry, you can go to horse shows or farm sales and buy used tack at low price from there.

Be careful in buying a saddle pad online since returning back the product got from online store can be very costly for your pocket.  If you want to avoid it, you can buy product from local store, the best thing is you can go easily and replace the saddlery product if you don’t like it.

Financial Crisis in UK Equestrian Charity

Posted on 2008-11-06

The current global financial crisis has also affected the UK Equestrian charity people. The charity is desperate to sell some horses, useless saddle pads , horse rugs at a very low cost.

Old Horses who need especial care are becoming too expensive for horse owners. Most of the horse owners are selling them at whatever price available, they just want to get rid of them before the arrival of winter. The reason is they have to spend extra money in winter on horses especially on vet, stable/housing, horse rugs and blankets.

Most of the people when asked why they are doing it told that they are not happy doing this, but rising costs, insecurity of job and on top of that expensive vet fees, rising cost in equestrian clothes has forced them to take such a decision.

Contour Saddle Pads

Posted on 2008-10-13

For riding, it is an important factor in getting a comfortable saddle fit. But, there are some horses that do not have a normal back posture mean their back in not straight, getting a saddle pad for their posture is a problem.

Most of the saddle pads are designed for normal posture horses, but there are very few saddle pads for horses with slight dip in their back. Due to this, people avoid these kinds of horses for riding.

But recently, a company has developed contour saddle pads designed especially for these kinds of horses who have dip in their back or with prominent withers.

Though these saddle pads are little bit expensive but people having horses with abnormal back posture can use it for riding.

English and Western Saddles

Posted on 2008-10-06

The Horse Saddlery   Products are of two distinct types English and Western. Even English is divided into Endurance and Australian Saddles.

Both saddles are designed for different horse riding styles. Western Saddles have one style with different shape and sizes within a form.

The western saddles has horn and high fork on his front, a deep seat for comfortable sitting and a low to high cantle covering back of the seat.

English Saddles are lighter than western saddles and simpler than western saddles. They have a flatter seat, no fork and horn, with the front of the saddle known as pommel. The cantle at back of the seat is thin and is low to high as compared with western saddle.

English Saddles  comes from adventurous to pleasure trips. For pleasure and horse racing dressage and show saddles are used. Not all dress and show saddles are used for racing, they should be of high quality to be used in racing.

Signs to check unfit saddle pad

Posted on 2008-09-18

The first sign of a good saddle pad is that you should be able to ride it on many horses of same type smoothly. Your horse should not feel uncomfortable with saddle pad. The signs of good saddle pad are free movement of horse , fit properly to horse back and have a well balanced good weight distribution. These are the signs of high quality saddle pads . One thing is sure, if you are riding different breeds of horses like someday you are riding pony, other day you are riding mare then you need different saddle pads for both of them.

Now the question arises, how can we check whether saddle pad fits horse or not. Here are some signs to check whether your horse is comfortable wearing saddle pad or not.

  • White hairs on horse body. White hairs on your hose body under the saddle area are the fist indication sign of poor fit. With time your horse can feel pressure, hairs can be broken down and your horse can be seriously injured.

  • Dry spots on horse body.  If you see moisture on your horse back after removing saddle pad after long ride then it is the sign of pressure points of saddle pads on your horse back.
  • Sores on horse body. Sores and galls can arise on your horse body due to poorly fitting saddle pad or poorly adjusted saddle pad.

  • Rolling or rocking from side to side. On riding if saddle pad is not fixed on a particular position and rocks from side to side then it is a clear sign of unfitted saddle pad.

  • Restricted Movement of Horse. It requires careful observation in noticing. Restricted horse movement, ideally a professional rider notices it since he knows the difference in the way horse move under different saddle pad.

So, if you notice next time any of the signs mentioned above take it very seriously else your horse can injure himself or you while riding.

  • Hoof Boot : Cover and protect the hooves of horses
  • Horse Bit : Act as a interaction  between horse rider and horse. Most delicate thing to handle.

Before saddling your horse always tie your horse with a rope such that it is safe for handler and horse. Brush your horse back and girth area carefully; remove all kind of things under the saddle pad.

Saddle Pads are shaped to fit perfectly to a saddle and always have some ties and hook that keep it fixed while riding horses.

Lift saddle to an extent such that it doesn’t hit the horse or knock paddle out of position. Always place the saddle pad forward over the withers and slide it back into place. Make sure the saddle pad is even on both sides. Put saddle pad gently on horse back. Putting it heavily on horse back may cause him injury.

A sore under saddle pads

Posted on 2008-07-15

Open sores tends to happen on trail horses, ranch horses, and other horses ridden for long hours. If sores happen to your horse, then they should always be considered serious and investigated properly.

Sores can be caused by broken tree, a nail or staple that is losing and digging from horse’s back. Must check your saddle pad for wrinkles or foreign objects such as burrs.

Development of white hairs in saddle pads area

White hairs in the saddle area appear as a result of inappropriate pressure from a saddle pads

The saddle pad pressure changes the hair follicle, which then produces a white hair. White hairs can be delicate and often do not appear until a coat change occurs, either in spring or fall. However, if the white hairs reappear, or they are permanent then your horse may be suffering from back pain originating from poorly-fitting saddle.
